Sophie was a few months older than Polly is now, the first time I interviewed her for school. I don’t remember it being difficult to get her to answer, but maybe it was! Polly is very verbal and says so many things throughout the day — she makes us laugh so much at how articulate she is and the funny things she says. She is not, however, interested in performing. I tried to ask her a series of questions while she played this morning and many of them she answered immediately. Others she ignored or I had to answer other questions to get her to cooperate. A few are things I answered on her behalf, because it’s very obvious to us which things she loves best!
Each of my girls have attended an at home daycare until they were old enough for pre-kindergarten in our school district. My aunt has always kept toddlers in her home and it has been such a blessing to us to have such a wonderful place for them to grow up and make new friends. My mom retired the spring after Polly was born and started keeping her and my niece. She added a few other friends when school started in the fall and we have loved the sweet little friendships they are all forming. Since my parents are building a new house, she alternated keeping the girls at my house and my sisters, but they are so close to being ready to move in. We can’t wait to walk next door for school a few mornings each week!
Here are a few questions I was able to walk through with Polly this morning. We’ll continue adding more as she’s able to better articulate her preferences! Italicized answers are her own — she got some assistance on the others.
1.What is your name? I’m Polly Harrison, mama.
2. What is your favorite color? She said blue, because she thinks that every color is blue or pink!
3. What is your favorite toy? my magnets (Magna-tiles)
4. What is your favorite television show? Princess Sofia the First — she always says the whole title
5. What is your favorite thing to eat? a sandwich and a “big cheese like BB” — that’s what she calls Sophie and she’s talking about eating string cheese
6. What is your favorite game to play? running, hide and seek, and ring around the roses
7. What is your favorite animal? She was pretty distracted at this point, so I was asking about specific animals and she said I don’t like kitty cats, mama! She is obsessed with our cat and sits in the front window talking to her every day!
8. What is your favorite song? Let’s sing Jesus (Jesus Loves Me). She also really likes You are My Sunshine, Happy Birthday, and Rock-a-bye Baby.
9. What is your favorite book? Firebird
10. Who is your best friend? Baby Kaymin, Kallahan, Vera, Saylor Jane
11. What is your favorite thing to do outside? play in the garden, water table, ride the golf cart, blow bubbles, sidewalk chalk
12. What do you like to take to bed with you at night? Minnie Mouse
I’ll be sharing a full Two Years with Polly post later this month, with more details about things she loves and her current development.
I will be interviewing the girls on their first day of school each year for as long as they will let me. I can’t wait to see what a difference a year (or two) makes in their answers!
