In case you missed it, you can you can see all of our NYC recap posts here: part one | part two | part three | part four
Day two is going to have to come to you in multiple parts, because we took so many pictures. We all agreed that it was our very favorite day and that’s mostly because we weren’t overly scheduled. We had a few things that were time sensitive, but for the part we wandered around the city and tried our best to check things off of our list.
Also, I left my camera at the hotel (because I didn’t want to cart it around all day), so all of these are iPhone snaps. I might regret that one day, but the memories outweigh the photographs, so I just tried not to think about it too much.
We had breakfast at Pershing Square, which is just across the street from Grand Central Station and a 45 second walk from our hotel. It’s tucked under a bridge and has the best ambiance! We walked in right as they opened at seven and were happy that we beat the breakfast rush, since it was full by the time we left. This was probably my favorite meal of the entire trip, so bookmark this one for your next adventure.
Since we saw the city from Top of the Rock after dark, we planned our Empire State Building tour for first thing in the morning. It didn’t hurt that this was a school day during an off peak week, but we were pretty much the first people in line that morning.
We breezed through the exhibit, although the girls wanted to stop for photos on almost every level!
Renita, one of the Empire State Observation Deck employees, could not keep her hands off of Sophie. She asked where we were from and when we told her Alabama, she decided to repay some of our southern hospitality. Fortunately, Sophie is fairly affectionate!
This is what happens when you ask someone else to take a photograph of your family…
So we mostly resorted to selfies. Here is where I tell you that we are going to have to invest in one of those little iPhone tripods for trips like this!
Our girls were much better photographers than the strangers we encountered.
The weather was pretty mild on our second day, so we ran back over to our hotel to drop off our heavy jackets and extra gear. We were going to be on foot for most of the day and weren’t looking forward to carrying those things around. We ducked in Grand Central Terminal and paid a visit to the whispering tunnels before hopping on the subway for a trip further south.
The girls were such pros at navigating the subway, by the end of our trip, but we had so many funny stories for just a few days. Sophie had the hardest time getting her Metrocard to swipe, so I have hilarious video of her cheering the first time she did it. We also encountered a few interesting people on our trips and were delivered a dissertation by a lovely man who told us that eating pie could lead to sin in your eye. Sophie was particularly tickled by these encounters!
