I used to think that Mother’s Day had to be a big thing — that unless you got an extravagant gift or breakfast in bed, that it couldn’t possibly be perfect. That was, of course, before I had kids. Once you add little people to the mix, there is rarely anything relaxing or extravagant about the day. It didn’t take long for me to realize that it’s the people who make the day. You can’t go into holidays with big expectations, because no matter what it is you expect, there is the potential for disappointment. What you can do, is enjoy every single happy moment as they happen and thank your lucky stars that God gave you these wonderful people in the first place.
Here is what Mother’s Day looked like at our house:
1. Cash from “the kids” in a homemade card. This could not have been more perfect, because I’ve been contemplating (what I consider) an expensive piece of jewelry and this made me feel better about the purchase. I’ll report back when it arrives in a few weeks!
2. The sweetest piece of pottery that Ella made at school. I broke my favorite jewelry dish a few months ago and she did her best to reconstruct it for me.
3. A handmade card from Sophie, with an adorable photograph that is 100% her at this very moment.
4. Lots of big baby kicks, because number three decided they are very active this week.
5. A drive-thru breakfast on the way to church that was just delicious.
6. Plenty of tears about ridiculous things, because I’m pregnant and can’t help myself.
7. An afternoon of pool relaxing while the girls snoozed in the shade.
8. Fast food for lunch (this time it was Subway) that I picked up myself, because a ten minute drive with the sunroof open sounded heavenly.
9. Brownies a la mode for an afternoon treat.
10. A new bathing suit that made me feel super confident and got all the compliments.
11. A great hair day.
12. Texts to and from all of my favorite moms.
13. Teaching my oldest to shave her legs (obviously I asked before sharing this photo!) and watching her hilarious faces.
14. Laughing a my youngest as she observed the ceremony and then complained about her hairy legs (sorry, kiddo, you’ve still got awhile).
15. An afternoon drive to visit Josh’s parents.
16. Delivering simple gifts to our moms that the girls picked out all on their own.
17. Our first official dinner by the pool, cooked up by my handsome husband: kabobs, burgers, oven potatoes & grilled broccoli.
18. Early bedtimes for the girls.
19. Back rubs and ice cream and a Westworld binge session.
Basically, it was the perfect day. How did you spend Mother’s Day?
