I haven’t tallied all of the results from our Reader Survey just yet, but a clear trend is that you want to see more posts about our home. We’re scheduled for some winter weather here in the south and the girls are out of school, so we’re all cuddled up around the fire, watching for snow. While we’re at it, Sophie and I have been doing some internet browsing for inspiration for her room. Wanna see?
Sophie has wanted a “pink” room from the very beginning, but I was skeptical. I really want the girls to love their rooms, but I also want something that will grow with them and can be easily transformed down the road. I happened to be browsing the Matilda Jane website over the holidays and saw this beautiful line. Sophie is a big MJ fan and I thought this might be the perfect fit for her new room. Yes, it’s expensive, but if I buy an entire bedding ensemble from Pottery Barn or somewhere similar, it would cost me just as much. I decided to order the comforter and the pillow shams and then find less expensive sheets and possibly DIY the dust ruffle. The thing I love most about the bedding is that it’s floral and girly, but it isn’t overly sweet. I didn’t want to use pastels and the more saturated colors in this scheme is exactly what I wanted.
We already have a vintage iron bed, painted this mint green color. I bought it on the side of the road, before the girls were born, for $150?! The girls have been sharing it since they moved in together, but since we’re upgrading to a queen for Ella, Sophie will be using it in her room. I love how the green color works with this bedding and won’t require any paint.
The unicorns are things we already have, since Sophie is obsessed with them. She got the stuffed animal for her birthday last year and the wall mount was a gift from Santa. I plan to use a pink oval mirror from her nursery and mount the unicorn head right on it!
I toyed around with doing a pink satin dust ruffle (we already have the fabric for that), but I’d really like a darker color to better ground the room. Walmart, believe it or not, has a great dark chambray fabric that I think would be super cute. I’m thinking about getting enough for the dust ruffle and to recover a small chair we’ve had since we first got married. We all refer to it as Beemer’s chair, since she loved sitting in it, and Sophie is thrilled with the idea of having it in her room.
Josh’s parents have a huge, hand-made dresser, that we’re trying to borrow from them. It’s already white (and has about twenty tiny drawers!), but needs a little facelift. I like the idea of plenty of drawers for her — both for clothes storage and all of her treasures.
I really love the color of these two rooms. It’s a soft pink, but isn’t harsh or overwhelming at all. I love how subtle it is and think it would really brighten up her room. I also love the artwork in that room on the right. Sophie loves to draw and paint, so I really hope to incorporate a gallery wall, where we can rotate her favorite pieces.
I haven’t shared any photos from the interior of our house yet, but I figured this was a pretty good place to start! Forgive our post-holiday mess — I’m trying to relax and let them enjoy all of their new goodies before life returns to normal full force.
Here is the view when you walk in her door. No, we don’t normally have an extra air mattress in there — we have had many slumber parties over the holidays and they aren’t quite ready to say goodbye! The roof slopes on the front of our house and I love the interior roofline upstairs. Each room has a dormer window on the front and we plan to build in a small window seat here. There is a spotlight in the dormer ceiling, so it makes a perfect little reading nook.
We plan to keep the bed where it is — Sophie loves that it creates a little hidey hole behind her bed! I’m thinking about creating the gallery wall above her bed, between the sloped wall and the second window.
We have plans to repaint all of the rooms upstairs, replace the light fixtures and lay new carpet. The closet doors in Sophie’s room are mirrored and I know that I should update them with paneled doors or something, but we’re all kind of crazy for the mirrors. Growing up in this house myself, I know how fun it was to dance and play there and as a teenager, it was a great place to get ready. It helps bounce light around the room and they still function well, so they’re staying. One closet is outfitted with closet organizers and the other is filled with shelves for toy storage. Her piano fits perfectly in the alcove, so it will be staying, too. I’m thinking about nixing curtains altogether upstairs and maybe ordering fabric roman shades or a blind of some sort.
What do you think?
We are super excited to share the process as we plan for and renovate my childhood home this year. You can see previous posts in this series here: Introducing the Log House | Log House Vlog: Episode 01
