Remember when blogging was just talking about what you did every day? I used to talk about princess tea parties and pizza picnics. I aimed to snap a photo every single day so that I could update Josh on what we were doing at home while he was traveling. Did you even know that’s how this blog started? I know that people have places to be and things to do this week and blogs are probably really low on the priority list, so for today I thought I’d share an old-school style weekend recap. Who’s with me?!
Friday // Can we talk about holiday traffic? I already spend way too much time in the car every day, but holiday traffic is killing my commute! I needed to run to Walmart for a few things we needed to bake a pie and I met Jennifer to safely deliver her Christmas cards. I took her a hilarious Rae Dunn mug that I snagged at HomeGoods earlier in the week and then she showed up with actual wrapped holiday gifts. I gave her a hard time for wrapping me a present when I dug her mug out of a shopping bag in my trunk. See also: world class friend. I got home later than usual (thank you traffic) and we cooked a delicious meal over a glass of wine while the kids watched a Christmas movie. I secretly love Friday nights because it’s my one night “off.” I don’t mean that we completely ignore the girls and let them fend for the themselves, but it’s the night where I don’t let them interrupt what we’re watching and I don’t eat kid food. We all sat at the kitchen counter for dinner and then the girls headed upstairs while we caught up on our way-too-full DVR. We crash landed in bed after way too many episodes of Vikings and I willed myself to sleep late.
Saturday // This weekend held our first of many installments of family Christmas. I woke up in a cold sweat because I couldn’t remember if the elf had been moved (he hadn’t), but I did fall back asleep for a few more hours and the girls never came in to wake us. Ella baked a delicious Derby Pie to take with us to our Christmas celebration and I had to make another last minute run to Walmart to pick up something I forgot the night before. We had plans to eat ourselves silly, play Dirty Santa and have a tacky sweater contest, so Josh and I got all dolled up for the occasion. He ordered that Seinfeld sweater months ago (and paid way too much for it), but his love for Jerry and tacky holiday sweaters runs deep, so it couldn’t be avoided. I borrowed that neon version from my sister and secretly loved it. It was oversized and slouchy — I promise I haven’t gained 50 pounds since Friday.
Sunday // We declared Sunday a family fun day, because we’ve had a list of things we all wanted to do, but our calendars haven’t been cooperating. We went to early church and sat by ourselves, but it was such a great service. Guest speakers are never my favorite, but I actually loved this week’s message. We headed over to Cracker Barrel afterward and got to sit by the fire while we enjoyed breakfast! We aren’t huge fans of their pancakes, so Sophie didn’t have to suffer too much. She ordered grits, bacon and yogurt from their GF menu and Josh let her have a biscuit after she cleaned her plate. We’ve been letting her have one serving of something off-plan each week and so far that’s going really well. We should have her blood work back this week and will tweak her diet accordingly, but even she agrees that she is a completely different person these days! After breakfast, we headed to the movie theater to see Rogue One and had popcorn for brunch. Holidays mean you get six meals a day, right? Ella was GLUED to the screen, but Sophie slept through the middle hour and a half of the film. She saw just enough at the beginning and end to feel like she watched the movie. This is pretty standard for her — she’s never made it through an entire movie at the theater. Later in the afternoon, we rode back into town with my sister and Hudson for a visit with Santa Claus. The kids did great and the pictures turned out super cute!
Ella and her Derby Pie. She can make this without any assistance from me!
Our amazingly tacky Christmas sweaters. Josh plans to wear his to every party this week.
Breakfast selfies and clean plates!
A little movie theater photo (with the real camera!) to embarrass our sweet daddy.
Maybe one more…
Mugging on our Brother Cousin.
How cute are these three?!
Side ponytails + missing teeth = my favorite thing ever!
How is that for a fantastic weekend?! We’re looking forward to cramming so much Christmas goodness into the next eleven days. This is my last day to work until after New Years and I can’t wait to spend so many days at home with my people. We still have quite a few things to check off of our holiday bucket list, so I hope to be back sharing all of our fun next week. Merry Christmas!
