“And this is the confidence we have towards Him, that if
we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
1 John 5:14
I came across the verse on Instagram several days ago and it was paired with a quote that said “I’m not lucky; you have no idea how much I’ve prayed.” I am so guilty of seeing things through the filter of social media and finding myself jealous or trying to figure out how they can afford that or why some people seem to be so blessed when others are hurting. What’s worse is when I’m on the receiving end of that same judgement, my feelings are so easily hurt.
It is easy to make a passing judgment or claim that it isn’t fair when other people are blessed with the things we want for ourselves when we have no idea what they are struggling with on a daily basis. I remember when we were dealing with infertility and miscarriage and people would ask us about our family plans on a regular basis. I would get so frustrated, despite their good intentions, because we were praying harder than they could possible imagine and trusting Him to answer in His own time. There have been so many times in my life where I wanted something desperately, only to find it wasn’t what God had in store for me at the time. How amazing is it when he reveals His plan to us further down the road and we find that He answers our prayers when we boldly ask according to His will?!
I was hoping to have this post up for you yesterday, but our weekend was full of fun things and I never found time to sit down at the computer. I let a few weeks slide by, but I had been having regular Periscope sessions on Thursday nights while Ella was at dance class and decided to jump back in this past week.
I had penciled in the lettering on this particular page, but wasn’t sure how I would finish it off and decided to do it live while we chatted, in case you had any questions or suggestions about what supplies to use. One of the things I love most about Periscope is that it’s live and unedited and I feel like I come off a little more true to myself than when I have an opportunity to edit the video in my favor! I might be rethinking that after this one, but it was still a lot of fun. The video is just over an hour so don’t feel like you have to watch the whole thing. It seems so much shorter when you’re drawing and painting and interacting with other people, so I’m always surprised when I realize how long I’ve been talking.
After the video wrapped and the watercolors had plenty of time to dry, I went back in with an Illustrated Faith pen and made the lettering darker where the paint had covered too much up. I also outlined the verse with a fun three-dimensional graphic element and added some dots and crosses with both a black and white gel pen. I really love how the watercolor technique turned out — it looks almost tie-dyed — and it was super easy to do.
