Can we talk about how cute notes and letters from your children are? I love when Sophie asks me to transcribe something for her, because there is always a laugh to be found. Since Ella is old enough to write on her own, reading her words is always a great surprise. I know I’ve shared some of these on Instagram earlier in the year, but as a part of her writing time in class (she’s in second grade), Ella has been writing letters to her family. I look forward to the day when her spiral bound notebook comes home in her backpack each week, even when the letters aren’t meant for me.
I asked her if it was okay for me to share these here. Eight year olds are funny like that — they are either super embarrassed by their efforts or they want to share the most inappropriate of stories (I’m saving a video, full of potty humor that she wants me to show you, for another day). Here are a few of my favorite entries.
Dear Gran, Did you have a good day at school? I thought about doing you first because you have been waiting for a long time. Guess what we are on book 28 on Jack and Annie. Mrs. Campbell is happy to read 28 because it is High Tide in Hawaii and she needed a little sunshine. I am happy about you being in here for math. I love you to the moon and back. Love, Ella
Dear Ella, Thanks for choosing me next. I love to write letters to students and to granddaughters! I am having a great day in the computer lab. I love teaching new skills to students. I love to see classes get excited about learning. It makes me happy when teachers like Mrs. Campbell help students to love good books. I love to know what your class is reading so keep me posted, okay? I don’t know much about second grade math, so I am pretty pumped to come to your class! Be ready to teach me everything you know. I asked God for a grandchild and he gave me you! I love you with my whole heart. I am so proud of you! Love, Gran
Dear Daddy, I had a great day! My favorite book series is the Jack and Annie. Guess what number we are on? We are on number 29. It was exciting at school today because it was the 100 day of school and we got to do fun and exciting things today. How did work go today? We have been learning about fairy tales. How is going with the Maze Runner? What is your favorite movie? Did you like school when you were a kid? I love you to the moon and back. Your cute child, Ella
Dear Ella, I have a good day every day because of you and Sophie! My favorite book is probably The Lord of the Rings series. I miss you guys when I’m at home all day by myself working, but I know you are working hard at school. My favorite movie is really a top 3 in no particular order: Gladiator, Good Will Hunting and Shawshank Redemption. I loved school because we got to play! There are no words that I could write or say that could convey how much I love you. That is why I tickle you, wrestle you, carry you on my back, play hide-and-go-seek and all the other fun stuff we do. It is because I want to show you how much I love you! Your most handsome daddy, Josh Fields
Dear Mom, You have been a great mom. We are learning about fairy tales. Our fairy tale is Little Red Riding Hood. We are reading Jack and Annie books. We are on book 30 and it is a Merlin Mission book. Everybody in my class loves the Merlin Mission books. Emily picked me for buddy lunch today. It was fun. She picked me and Mrs. Waldrop’s Savannah. I had a good day today. Love, Ella
Dear Ella, Thank you so much for saying that – I don’t always feel like a great mom, so it’s nice to hear sometimes. You are a pretty great daughter yourself. I watched some home movies today of when you were a tiny girl and they made me laugh. You were so silly! I can’t wait to watch them with you! Love, Mom
Dear Gran, Did you have a good day? I had a great day. What did you do in the computer lab? Are you glad that Campbell got to come in the computer lab? Did you hear that we might have snow flakes? We had a sub for 15 minutes. It was Mrs. Cody. I am done writing my story. I love you! P.S. Can you tell mom to let me go see Annie! Thank you! Love, Ella
Dear Ella, Thanks so much for writing to me for the second time! I love to receive notes from you! Each day in the computer lab is wonderfully busy because I have different students working on a host of projects. I like to see students study and learn new things. I love it when Mrs. Campbell’s class comes because you are all good learners. When I watched the news today, I saw that the weather will be very cold this weekend. Bundle up if you go outside to play. I will speak to your mother about letting you go see Annie. Is it a play or a movie? Where is it showing? It is time for me to get back to work! Have a fun day, Ella. I love you, Gran
Dear Daddy, Did you have a good day? I did. Pictures was great. We got a compliment from Mrs. Floyd saying that we all look really good! We have to go to Stanley’s birthday party today! Momma remind me. I can’t go to church, though. Sorry for the wait. Gran had to write me back too because I forgot to give it to her last week. I love you to the moon and back! P.S. Let’s go see Pbody and Sherman! This is really the end now. Love, Ella
Dear Ella, I always have a great day when I get to see you and your sister! I loved your pictures. You’ll love having them when you are an adult. Hopefully you look back and laugh when you remember how silly your daddy can be. Are you nervous about this year’s first competition? You will do great as always. I love you big, bigger than the bun on your head! P.S. I just wanted to write “p.s.” I have nothing else to say. Love, Daddy
Dear Poppy, Sorry it took me forever to write to you. Gran said you might want to write to me. I had a great day! Did you have a great day? Have you been working on the barn? I bet the barn looks great. We write on Tuesday, but sometimes I might be late because I forget to take it home. I love you to the moon and back! P.S. I told momma and gran, but they won’t listen. Please tell momma to take me to see Annie at the movie theaters! Love, Ella
Dear Ella, Gran told me that you were writing some of your family members. I have been waiting with anticipation on my letter from you. I did have a great day today. I have been working very hard on the barn as well. I can’t wait until it is finished for all of us to enjoy. It will be a great place for us to gather as a family and enjoy each other’s company. It will also be our special place to play our favorite game, Dominoes. I think of you and Sophie and Hudson all the time and have several pictures of all of you in my office at work. I look at them every day. I also love you very, very much and you are very special to me. P.S. Maybe you and I can have a special day to go see Annie! With all my love, Poppy
Dear Mom, How was your day? My day was great! We had a sub for about fifteen minutes today at the beginning of the day. Me and Kaitlyn thought that this was going to be a girls table because Henderson moved his chair to table blue, but then Mrs. Campbell told Henderson to move his chair back to where he was so it did not become a girl table. I love you to the moon and back! P.S. I am going to say this one more time. Take me to go see Annie! Love, Ella
Dear Ella, My day was great, but I was tired after being gone this weekend. Did you have fun at home with daddy today? You want to know what my favorite part of the day was? When you showed me the work you did in your Bible today all by yourself! I love that our Bible crafting is something we can do together. I love that you are learning more about Jesus while we are working. I am so excited about watching you dance this weekend. You are going to look beautiful and you are such a talented dancer. P.S. We will watch Annie as soon as it comes out on video! I love you, Belly Button! Mom
