If you had asked a week ago what today would look like, I would have told you I’d be living in a hotel room, wearing suits every day and missing my people. I was scheduled to be out of town this week for trial and wasn’t looking forward to being so far from home during the first week of the holiday season. As it often does, my work plans changed and I made the drive home from vacation yesterday instead of heading out of town.If you had asked me yesterday what today look like, I would have told you I was dreading wearing “business professional” for the first time in eight days and not looking forward to my hour long commute at all.
Ella woke up out of sorts yesterday morning, but I chalked it up to spending long days outside in the cold and breathing in wood smoke as we watched endless hours of football on Saturday. She slept most of the way home yesterday and thank goodness, because last night was a sleepless night for everyone. She suffered night terrors as an infant, but it is rare we battle those now. She does sleep walk sometimes and have weird dreams that she often can’t work her way out of. We discovered last night that those symptoms are exaggerated by a fever and she spent almost all night in tears, crying out about Donald Duck and spaceships and ceiling fans.
I worked furiously this morning to get the smell of campfire smoke out of my hair and tore through bins of clean and dirty clothes looking for socks and a camisole. My plan was to leave Josh and Ella in bed and take Sophie to my mom’s on my way into the office. Talk about convenient that she works at the elementary school and Taz could hitch a ride with her. Unfortunately, when I went to get her dressed for school her body was hot to the touch and we were entering round two of this mysterious fever virus. As much as I hated to miss today after being out all last week, there was no way I could leave a sleep-deprived dad in charge of two sick girls. I swapped my slacks for sweats and set out to procure more medicine before school traffic took over our neighborhood.
Sophie is still asleep, almost seven hours later. Josh has done his best to work despite the many distractions. Ella and I have been sharing the bed for most of the day, catching up on The Voice and snuggling with all the bunnies. I did manage to catch up on post-vacation laundry and our dog has gotten plenty of attention today. I started the She Read’s Truth advent reading plan today (journaling Bible found here) and got my planner organized for the next few weeks. Photos from our vacation have been dumped, family photos have been taken and our holiday cards have been designed. I can’t wait to share what all we’ve been up to.
Here’s to trying to have a more normal “Monday” tomorrow.
