It’s hard to believe our trip to NYC was almost a year ago. It was after that weekend, we decided that taking a kid free trip involving an airplane and an empty hotel room was a yearly necessity. Although a football game doesn’t really compare to 5 days in the Big Apple, we knew we wanted to go to the season opener in Arlington and what better way to celebrate the kick off of football season than a mini-vacay with your favorite person. I opted not to take my camera and instead enjoy having fun instead of trying to document it all, so we have plenty of iPhone snaps, but not a single actual photograph of us the entire week.
We boarded a plane last Thursday afternoon and were in our Ft. Worth hotel room eating Dominoes delivery by midnight. I hate I didn’t document my travel outfit (one of my favorites) or our yummy pasta dishes, but we were worn out and ready to crash.
Friday morning, we slept late, enjoyed a continental breakfast, took a cab across town for a couples massage (thank you, husband. we also had to take a pic of the full champagne glasses since neither of us drink it, but we were forced to carry them around all morning like we were loving it!), had a yummy cajun lunch at Razoo’s, did some shopping in downtown Ft. Worth, found Retro Cowboy which servies original recipe Dr. Pepper (yes it does taste different!), took Molly the Trolley back to our hotel, enjoyed a delicious dinner at Reata (break out the checkbook, but don’t skimp on dessert!), watched some football at Jake’s bar and took a late night stroll back to our hotel to crash.
Saturday was gameday. We got up early and watched College Gameday in the dark, met our friends at Riscky’s BBQ for lunch (where I ate tacos instead and we were surrounded by Michigan fans), we made friends with some Bama fans who were tailgating, I shed my boots in the 100+ temperatures, we stood in line at Walmart to potty before the stadium opened (and said “no, thank you” to the porta-potties), threw the football around in the parking lot, said “Roll Tide” and sang the fight song a LOT, made several thousand new friends, had nachos and BBQ, sang Rammer Jammer and FINALLY found a cab ride back to Ft. Worth
Sunday, we finally managed to sleep until 10 o’clock and walked back downtown for a lazy lunch at Crazy Eyes before heading to the airport. The game was being re-aired on television that morning, so we got to watch a bit of it on TV while we enjoyed our lunch. We spent the day in a few airports, enjoying frozen yogurt and the first season of LOST. We stopped for a Frosty once we reached Birmingham and were finally tucked in bed somewhere around 1 o’clock Monday morning.
It was a busy trip, but so much fun. It was the only away game I’ve ever attended and definitely a good one to get started with! We joked that the whole weekend felt like an ESPN commercial. If you had even a hint of red on anywhere you were greeted with a very loud “Roll Tide!”. We had a great time explaining to Texas residents why we were there all weekend and trying to make Michigan fans understand why southern girls dress up for football games. I even had a very long discussion with the security guard at DFW about why my t-shirt had an elephant on it. We were so glad to be back home with our girls on Monday and we’re still recovering from four days away.
Now it’s time to start planning our new annual getaway for 2013. Where to go, what to do.
Oh, and Roll Tide :).
