Last Tuesday was destined to be fairly traumatic. Sophie had her 15 month check up and as bad as those vaccinations can be, she wasn’t the one I was most worried about. It seems that since Ella’s 4 year old checkup, the vaccination recommendations have changed and the doctor didn’t want to wait until her birthday. We decided to kill two kids, er, birds with one stone and let them head to the doctor together. I knew I should just plan to stay home with them afterwards because Ella is afraid of everything and I knew she would be dramatic.
To ease the pain of four vaccinations each, I thought it was only fitting that we head to the new Krispy Kreme for hot donuts fresh off the conveyor belt. Who doesn’t love KK, right? These photos are beyond deceiving because Ella hated the experience and Sophie chowed down on her “hot and ready” like nobody’s business. Ella doesn’t like glazed donuts, but I thought for sure she was like the powdered one. After this photo, she ate one bite and spit it out, spending the rest of breakfast pouting over her lack of food. Josh & I both had chocolate covered glazed donuts and they were YUMMY. I have to will myself to drive by on the way to work every morning. My waist line does not need the 400 some odd calories in these bad boys.
Sophie weighed 21 pounds even this visit; she is finally moving up the charts. She’s still in the 25 percentile for weight, but her height has dropped a little to the 75 percentile. Ella was 39.5 pounds and so close to the booster seat required weight. I’m going to be shopping for new seats this week and she is so excited.
In addition to the vaccinations, Ella had to have a hearing and vision screening and did so well. She was very nervous, but performed like a champ. I hate that I didn’t take a picture of her with the earphones on, she was so funny! She kept forgetting to raise her hand when she heard the sound and the technician and I were getting so tickled. Every time we would ask her she would giggle and raise the correct hand. I’m chalking it up to nerves.
Our pediatrician is so sweet and brought Ella a purple Otter Pop to help calm her down before shots. Unfortunately, she pitched it in the floor while Josh and the nurse physically restrained her. I had to turn my back until it was all over. She looked at us like she had been violated! Both girls checked out well and had lots of fun playing with our phones while SD & I chatted with the doctor. We talked about how many words Sophie was saying, her quirky personality, what all Ella would eat these days and how fears & nightmares were perfectly normal at this age.
After the doctor’s visit, daddy had to go home and work and took Sophie with him. I promised Ella that if she was a big girl at the doctor, we could spend some time together after lunch before heading back home. She had been begging to see Winnie the Pooh, so we found a theater nearby and watched a precious movie with a big bucket of popcorn. She complained that the previews lasted too long (30 minutes before a kids’ film?!?!), but loved the movie. She giggled at all the right parts and had such sweet and funny comments about what was happening.
We also managed to get a little school shopping in on our way home. She got these super cute skinny jeans at the Gap along with a few dresses and tops. She got some shorts and t-shirts at Old Navy and these black patent flat sandals. Finally, at Target she found several cute dresses. She is getting so excited about her new school, but really wants to dress like a big girl. I’m finding it so hard to let go of the white sandals and hair bows and let her have an opinion. Lucky for me, we found lots of things that were hip enough for Ella, but still sweet enough for me.
It was a fun day to spend with my big girl and I am so proud of how she handled the doctor. Even though she knew those shots were coming, we agreed not to talk about them until right before they happened. I explained that we shouldn’t let them ruin her whole morning and I was so impressed with how she responded. I don’t get to spend many days one on one with her, so it was nice to take a break from work and take her in. Even if she had to get shots to pull it off!
