Much like with Ella, our first day at home brought a doctor’s visit for sweet Sophie. Since she lost more than ten percent of her birth weight and was slightly jaundiced, we got up bright and early to dress two little girls and head back into town.
Of course, Josh laughed that I took my camera with us, but what did he really expect? Luckily, our pediatrician’s practice has an office open on Sundays and we got to see our favorite doctor there, Dr. Anderson. He has a fabulous bedside manner and Ella loves him. As usual, big sisters get star treatment, including extra Dora stickers.
We weren’t the only newborn waiting for a bilirubin check, so we all piled in the exam room and hung out for a bit. Ella counted airplanes out the window, Daddy acted silly and snuggled Sophie and we all sang some Hannah Montana tunes.
SD even gave Ella an “examination” on the table and checked to make sure all of her tickle-spots were okay. Lucky for him, they were in full working order! They made such a mess of the exam table that the nurses had to repaper the table before drawing blood for Sophie’s tests.
The best news of the day came on the scales. Sophie managed to gain four whole ounces in the 24 hours since our discharge, which placed her back below the ten percent weight-loss. We were given the go-ahead to discontinue supplemental formula feedings and get back to nursing and were told we could hold off on additional visits to the doctor for three whole weeks.
I was worn out after a morning out and about, but we had nothing this little girl could fit into. SD dropped me and Ella off at the door of Target since neither of us felt comfortable taking her in and let’s face it, even with a list daddy would never get what we needed! Ella waited until we were at the back of the store to tell me she needed to visit the potty, so we did a lot of walking. We grabbed preemie diapers, a few smaller outfit options and some other supplies we needed and were on our way home for a much needed nap.
