I knew I wanted something pretty special to hang on the hospital door when sweet Sophie got here, but I wasn’t sure what. Ella had a wooden plaque with her name on it that my dad made and it was beautiful. The problem was, it was loud! Every time a nurse came to visit at two o’clock in the morning, the plaque wiggled around on the door and woke us ALL up.
Ella has a rag wreath on the door of her room that I made last year and I really love it. I decided to do a similar wreath for Sophie’s room and we’d use it for the hospital, too. It turned out perfect and appears to be silent when opening and closing the nursery door.
The cast of characters for this morning’s craft-time: tulle wreath, 50 cent wooden letter from Hobby Lobby, sponge brushes, acrylic craft paint, Mod Podge and clear glass glitter.
Ella gave the wooden letter two coats of a soft shade of pink paint, allowing drying time between coats. Then we painted a generous coat of Mod Podge on the letter and Ella COVERED it with the clear glitter.
I let the Mod Podge dry for about thirty minutes and then shook off all of the excess glitter. I added a pink satin ribbon to the back of the “S” with hot glue and tied it to the wreath. My original plan was for the letter to hang in the center of the wreath, but the tulle is so full that I didn’t like the way it looked.
I made the wreath a few nights ago, but forgot to take pictures of the process! For anyone who is interested, I took a 10 inch wire wreath form and spray-painted it white. Then I took three spools of tulle in coordinating colors and cut them into 6 inch sections. It would have been smart to cut everything ahead of time and alternate colors, but pregnant girls don’t think about things like that. Instead, I did one color at a time, which got more difficult as I went along. Once it was full enough, I gave it a haircut and voila!
I know you see that button up there for an etsy shoppe, but clicking on it doesn’t really help since I’ve never actually listed anything. I’ve been thinking about getting my custom invitations, announcements and stationary listed between now and Sophie’s “birthday” so I can generate a little income while I’m home with her. After seeing how cute this wreath turned out (and nothing too similar listed on etsy currently), I’m thinking about giving them a go. What do you think?
