This is the rock house; built in 1923 by the postmaster general. It is said, that he picked up field stones each day on his mail route until he had enough to cover the house. True or not, it is a lot of rocks! When we bought the house there were boxwood hedges across the front that were so high you couldn’t see out the “windows” on the porch. We pulled them up and replaced them with little loropetalum. Much to our joy, they grew really fast and we love the pink blooms we get throughout the year.
The porch is one of our favorite places to spend time. Unfortunately, our house faces the local high school and we have a lovely view of the backside of the stadium. We’ve recently planted 19 new loropetalum across the front of our property which will provide a privacy hedge. The school has also landscaped the back of the stadium, so we’re hoping not to see bleachers too much longer. For now, we’ve added two large ferns on the ledges which give the porch some privacy and we’re thinking of adding bamboo shades since we get lots of late afternoon sun.
The porch swing was left by the previous owner and the white table and chairs were an antique mall find {along with the matching wire chair in my studio} for $50! The red and white cushions are from Hobby Lobby Homegoods and the throw pillows were all sewn by yours truly when I made the tableclothes in the living/dining rooms.
(1) Here you see another view of the porch, just next to our front door. Ella and I keep our wellies here in case we need to venture into the wet grass to water the plants or walk the dog in the mornings. (2) I just bought the new flag to grace our house for the holidays and I love how pretty it is against the blue sky. (3) Ella got her playground for her birthday last year, but she’s just now warming up to the swing. This is our side yard, but we treat it like our backyard. We call the large tree in the background the “Tree of Life” because it is huge and FULL of ivy making it very dense. (4) This is a side view of our house where we have an antique oak leaf hydrangea and crepe myrtles. The blue chair is one of two that really need refinishing. Despite their age and general “chippyness” I love them.
Although we would still like to add a privacy fence, a new metal roof and some additional plants, we are very happy in our little rock house. I hope you enjoyed the outdoor spaces and will come to visit again soon!
