Isn’t it beautiful? I know I said I was going to blog about a great DIY project, but we were all so excited that we didn’t take any pictures until after we were done! Instead, here is a recap.
I drew the shape of the headboard and had Poppy cut it out of mdf. Gran made the slipcover and I took it to be monogrammed on Tuesday. Josh picked up my mattress yesterday and I bought all of the linens at Homegoods & Ross. I used a twin-sized egg crate mattress for the foam on the headboard (we just turned it over so the smooth side faced out) and then stapled the slipcover in place. The bed frame is two pieces of mdf with cross-pieces for stability. We left the sides open on both sides and I bought baskets and bins to slide underneath. These hold extra linens, pull-ups and toys. The original plan was to sew a pleated bed skirt from the same ticking fabric, but we used an existing eyelet skirt so that we could make new curtains, too! Gran made lined curtains (the valances were already in the room) and we hung them using tension rods. This will help with the draft of our old house through the winter months.
I spent $302 for the materials, monogramming, mattress and bedding. Here’s the breakdown: mdf $116, mattress $107, foam $10, bedding $44, monogram $15, fabric $10. It might sound like a lot, but the headboard alone was $449 at PBK, not including shipping & monogramming, not to mention the bedding, mattress, curtains and bed frame. It’s a good thing I didn’t have to pay labor – this project was a steal.
We were planning on dismantling the baby bed today, too, but I’m just not ready! I love her bedding and since there is enough room for both beds we’re going to wait awhile. It might come in handy in case of an Ella-escape and will definitely help mommy with the transition to big girl stuff. I totally think she’s too little for “hot pink” (blanket at the bottom of the bed and polka-dot accent pillows – made by Gran, too), but it’s growing on me.
